The WHIM chair will not be for everyone, but we are hoping that many people with disabilities will see it as a better way to go than the current medical model for power wheelchairs. Two paradigm shifts need to happen in order for the WHIM concept to take hold: 1. People with disabilities would benefit by embracing the Maker mentality 2. Wheelchair funding would need to stop depending on insurance/Medical/Medicare for buying and repairing power wheelchairs, or insurance would need to provide alternatives for non-traditional wheelchairs Yes, yes, I see those raised hands. Both of these things will involve education, and purchasing alternatives beyond existing models. That's why I used the term "paradigm shifts." The wording of the points above might not be perfect, but the intention is hopefully obvious. None of this will be easy to change, nor will it happen overnight, but the 21st century is all about paradigm shifts. Our outdated systems are not working. We are held hostage by a system that provides outrageously priced, inferior wheelchairs. Legislation regarding wheelchairs specifies that required designs are ONLY for use inside our homes, so why even think about employment. Even if we get jobs, long waits for wheelchair repairs (while one might have to stay in bed) can jeopardize employment. Let's start the discussion now! We have a right to power wheelchairs that are well-built, easy to repair, include customization and affordability. We have a right to go outside!
